Chapter Eleven

After the outpouring of support from the town that morning, Corinne spent the afternoon making plans for an event to share her garden, and...spying on the front walk of the Prescott home. She needed to talk to Mr. Pierce, to finish their conversation. Despite a silent debate with herself not to worry, she still wondered if he was upset with her. Disquiet swam in her stomach, making it impossible to concentrate on her task.

His departure from her hadn’t contained any secret glances or the promise of future, stolen moments, and it was hard to keep faith that he continued to be interested in her. She remembered when he called her by her given name, and her skin warmed. The pleasure in his tone only a few hours ago when he’d said “Corinne” had seemed so strong. Was it possible for his affection to dissipate so quickly?

She got up from her chair then leaned against the window seat, peering through the lace curtains. Her shoulders slumped when she could see no movement in the yard. What was he doing?

Was he cursing becoming involved with her? Did he now believe her mother would be too much of a trial? He hadn’t accepted any money, and certainly he would decide helping her wasn’t worth his time.

A crack rent in her heart with the upsetting thought. Hastily, she gathered her notepad with the scribbled lists she’d made and left her room. All was quiet in the house as she made her way outside. Her father was at the hotel, and she had no idea where her mother was. There really was no guessing where she’d escaped to after what had happened this morning.

Corinne went down the front walk and averted her eyes from the brick house across the street. But as she unlatched the gate, a door opened. Hope shot through her, and she jerked her head in the direction of the noise. Her heart flew up her throat when Mr. Pierce came striding down the stone pavers toward the road. His intent focus stopped her in her tracks.

He closed the distance between them in mere seconds, and with each of his steps, her pulse sped up a little faster. Her breath came more quickly, and all she could think about was him wrapping his arms around her and kissing the dickens out of her. She tightened her fingers around her notepad.

“I’ve been waiting for you to appear,” he ground out, as if mad. But no scowl showed on his face. Only need.

She swallowed. “I was watching for you, as well.”

His gaze darkened. “Where are you going?”

“To my garden.” She couldn’t take her attention from the harsh lines of his face.

He lingered a beat then offered his arm. “Shall we?”

It was ridiculous. To have an escort along a path she could take even under cover of night. But she slipped her papers into her skirt pocket then slid her fingers into the crook of his elbow anyway. And while relief flooded her and calmed her earlier fears, her nerves still sizzled.
